US Health Care Debate: An A2 / A Lang and Lit Case Study

The way language is used by politicians in the media to shape public perception and response is interrogated in “Politifact’s Lie of the Year: ‘A government takeover of health care’.

This would be an interesting case study to follow, using various texts in terms of language, media and cultural contexts.

Cartoons and Child Abuse

Recently I noticed an Ionescoesque Rhinoceros change in profile pictures on Facebook.  This message also began to appear in people’s profiles:

Change your FB profile picture to a cartoon from your childhood. The goal? To not see a human face on FB until Monday, December 6th. Join the fight against child abuse, copy & paste to your status and invite your friends to do the same.

Sorry to be boring, but I’m trying to be useful!

This is for all current English A2 teachers,who, like me, are traveling from the Land of the Known (‘Language A2’)  to the Land of the Faintly Familiar (‘Language A: Language and Literature’).

We’re all waiting for the grand release of the Subject Guides for the new suite of ‘Language A’ courses—promised this month (December 2010). Then the excitement of workshops…online or face to face.
