The story of rubber

Charles Macintosh – used gum from rubber trees in South America to coat raincoats. There was a problem – the gum was sticky in the summer and brittle during winter.

The solution? Along came Charles Goodyear. He became obsessed with gum, poured his life savings into finding a way of improving the gum ….. and almost failed. Until, like many good scientific discoveries …

….. his break through came through chance. Some of the gum had been mixed with sulfur and left on a hot stove – instead of burning is changed into a thick mass. The gum had been vulcanised – it was stretchy, waterproof and non brittle. He had made rubber!
