Nitroglycerine and TNT

Nitroglcerine – discovered, 1847. Its problem? Too unstable – the slightest knock could cause it to explode.

The solution? TNT – first made in 1863 but not really used as an explosive since the 1900’s. The reason, too high an activation energy, so nobody knew it was so explosive!
