Art Initiative from Google

You and/or your students may be interested in a recent initiative from Google. Google have collaborated with some well known art museums to enable people to discover and view more than a thousand artworks online in great detail.

This could be a very useful teaching and learning resource: for example, in  the Investigation Workbook, students should be analysing and comparing art from different cultures and times, and considering it for its function and significance.

The site also enables students to create and share their own collections online: the ‘Create an Artwork Collection’ feature allows them to save specific views of any of the artworks and build a personalized collection.

Comments can be added to each painting and the whole collection can then be shared with others.

Google approached the museum partners without any curatorial direction, and each museum  chose the number of galleries, artwork and information they wanted to include, based on reasons specific to them.

All content in the information panel pertaining to individual artworks was also provided by the museums.

Please remind your students that the images on the Art Project site are copyright protected. The high resolution imagery of artworks are owned by the museums, and these images are protected by copyright laws around the world.
