We live in media…using Twitter

Yesterday morning I read a handful of  interesting posts about Twitter, and found the poster shown at the left,  by Tom Woodward. As it all followed on a long Skype conversation with a colleague about Twitter, I felt that all the signs were pointing to  today's blog post focusing on Twitter. Quick catch up, or background info: "Twitter is an online social networking and microblogging service that enables users to send and read short 140-character text messages, called "tweets". Registered users can ...

Beyond Bookmarks with Flipboard

In my last post, we explored social bookmarking with Diigo as a way to collect and share Internet resources.  In this post, we're going to take  a step further, and look at "curating" with Flipboard. Curation Let's start with the idea of  curation. “The term curation in the past commonly referred to museum and library professionals. It has since been applied to interaction with social media including compiling digital images, web links and movie files.” (link)  When you curate content, you offer ...

Social Bookmarking

Can you remember a time when "bookmarking"  a website (or creating a "favorite") meant saving its URL address somewhere in your computer, perhaps with a note or commentary, perhaps with a tag or keyword, and perhaps in a folder? In the last 10 years this saving of resources has become one of the major tools for a teacher, because of social bookmarking sites like Diigo and Delicious. (eBiz lists many more sites.  Several are useful, some are less so.)  A social bookmarking site gives you the ...

Scoop.it curation: online learning

My next two posts will use a fantastic web 2.0 tool called Scoop.it, which allows a 'curator' to collate and share web pages and content in the form of a magazine page. Once you (the curator) have created your magazine page (a curated topic) you can share this to social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and your Wordpress blog.  Readers can comment on individual posts and 'rescoop' the page. Businesses could certainly use Scoop.it as a marketing tool to ...
