Blast from the Past

Thirty Years Ago In December I thought I’d dig a little into some IBDP visual arts memories and look at the course as it was 30 years ago, when I was a young and eager art teacher (not so young now but still eager!). I confess I have a slight tendency to hoard, and up in the loft there are many boxes of ‘old stuff’. Some of it dates from the 1980s – a period when computers were primitive by today’s standards ...

Out of more than 200 visual arts blogs since 2010 here are the teacher top ten: these may reflect the main issues and questions that interest teachers (or at least have been looked at most times) My latest posts are NOT ...

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of the OCC (“It’s a Nightmare!” “No it’s Fantastic!”)

The IB say "Welcome to your OCC...The OCC is a key resource for teachers, coordinators and other school stakeholders. The enhanced branding and colour scheme improves both navigability and usability in order to delight the many of you who depend on the site for information and collaboration". I get a lot of correspondence from art teachers about the OCC (ONLINE CURRICULUM CENTRE http://occ.ibo.org/ibis/occ/) , not all of it favourable, to put it mildly... The bad Teachers are frequently mystified and confused by the ...

The NEW visual arts course

In my last blog I made some mention of the new DP visual arts course and suggested the 'top 4' differences between the current and the new course, but it’s probably about time to start talking about it in a bit more detail. Hopefully quite a few of you will already have participated in a workshop, either online or face-to-face. IB Diploma Programme subjects usually have a seven year lifespan. The current visual arts course (started in 2009) still obviously has ...

“I really wanted my artwork to be original…” (btw…NOTHING is original)

As a visual arts examiner, I regularly see the results of student attempts at originality and I have to tell you, it’s not pretty. And it’s not even original. Quite often it’s the opposite of original, it’s a cliché. If it was being presented as a Post Modern, ironic look at clichés and stereotypes, that might be OK – sort of – but in almost all cases I’m looking at a genuinely predictable, obvious image. I’ve seen it many times before. ...

VISUAL ARTS – IS THIS FUM or MSM?

THE FINAL UPLOAD - reminders For many IBDP visual arts teachers April is FUM (Final Upload Month) Also know as MSM (Maximum Stress Month). That was then… The history of the visual arts digital upload process is not exactly a success story, but rather a tale, I’m afraid, of frustration, angst and despair for many teachers or DP Coordinators. …This is now Anyway, the IB, perhaps feeling somewhat battered and bruised by so much negative feedback, have come back with a shiny new upload process and ...

THE VISUAL ARTS UPLOAD – FINAL REMINDERS!

Its less than three weeks before the deadline for all files to be uploaded (20 April)! REMINDERS PHOTOGRAPHING STUDIO WORK Photographs or videos of the studio work should be clear, reflect the work appropriately and be sized to fill a standard computer monitor screen at 100% zoom. For an especially large or detailed piece, separate close-up shots can be included in a later slot to detail further aspects of the piece. VIDEO No sound/music please! If submitting video, remember the emphasis on VISUAL arts. The ...

March 2015: the end is nigh!

If you are in your final year of DP visual arts, the end is near! The final deadline for your visual arts files to be uploaded to the IB is next month - April 20 - but a lot needs to happen before then, and if you have to factor a March/April school holiday (Easter?) into the period it might get tricky. At my school we are having the exhibition before the holiday, which means the show goes up this month. So ...

HAPPY NEW YEAR! (VISUAL ARTS GRADE AWARD December 2014)

Happy New Year, everyone! I’m going to start my 2015 Blog with a quick look back to the most recent Visual arts grade award meeting, which for the first time ever was VIRTUAL. Grade Award meetings occur twice a year (in November and June) and previously have always taken place in Cardiff (Wales, UK). Senior visual arts examiners together with the Chief and Deputy Chief examiners met (virtually) with the visual arts assessment team and the Subject Manager. Usually we also have ...
