THE VISUAL ARTS UPLOAD – FINAL REMINDERS!

Its less than three weeks before the deadline for all files to be uploaded (20 April)! REMINDERS PHOTOGRAPHING STUDIO WORK Photographs or videos of the studio work should be clear, reflect the work appropriately and be sized to fill a standard computer monitor screen at 100% zoom. For an especially large or detailed piece, separate close-up shots can be included in a later slot to detail further aspects of the piece. VIDEO No sound/music please! If submitting video, remember the emphasis on VISUAL arts. The ...

March 2015: the end is nigh!

If you are in your final year of DP visual arts, the end is near! The final deadline for your visual arts files to be uploaded to the IB is next month - April 20 - but a lot needs to happen before then, and if you have to factor a March/April school holiday (Easter?) into the period it might get tricky. At my school we are having the exhibition before the holiday, which means the show goes up this month. So ...

Exercise exploring film making techniques – Shot selections

The following is one in a series of simple exercises to encourage film students thinking about the mechanics of film making, and reflecting on creative choices made by film makers as conscious and intentional. My intention is that these exercises slot into the first semester of IB Film. Hopefully they will be a useful resource towards discussions leading to production portfolios, oral presentation and introducing the basic idea of supporting analytical ideas with actual examples of film language, the lingua franca ...

WHAT IS THE EXAMINER LOOKING FOR? (Relating to the 2015 visual arts upload for the current/’old’ course)

For many of us, this is more or less the last time that we will be thinking about “studio work” and the “investigation workbook” – certainly in those terms – because in a few weeks the visual arts course that started in 2009 will be just a fading memory. Personally speaking, as a course I felt it was far from perfect, but over the years I think most of us got used to it. One major flaw that frequently exasperated teachers in ...

Farewell interview videos – both on the OCC and the real thing!

OCC interview videos have GONE! The four interview videos that have been on the OCC for more than two years have now been removed. They were made because up until 2012 the visiting examiner had come to the school, looked at the exhibition and asked the questions. When this process was switched to the teacher asking the questions, the IB received numerous worried emails from teachers who did not know what to do and were asking for advice and guidance. The IB ...

The commentary, copying, teaching…and the influence of Mr Warhol

The May 2014 Visual Arts subject report is available on the OCC. It contains a wealth of useful information. I’ve selected four bits that it may be useful to highlight. Rembrandt , via Wikimedia CommonsEverything in the report reflects my own experiences as an examiner in the last examination session. This Blog post is primarily about the visual arts course that will be finishing next year rather than the course that has just started. 1,000-word commentary. The 1,000-word written commentary is an alternative ...

COMPARING OLD AND NEW: SIMILARITIES (Visual Arts courses)

In my last post, (Are you ready for the new visual arts course?)  I encouraged teachers to attend a visual arts workshop to learn all about the new course - which many (including me) will be teaching next month. For those new to the DP a comparison with the old (but still current) course may have no relevance, but if you have been and are teaching the ‘2009 onwards’ course, it may be useful to note similarities/differences. Here I am going to ...

VISUAL ARTS DIGITAL UPLOAD – GET STARTED!

HELPING YOURSELF AND/OR HELPING YOUR TEACHER (PREPARING FOR THE FINAL EXAMINATION/EXHIBITION) And so, depending on where you are and your teacher - and his/her plans and preparation for the visual arts digital upload - the time has come! I have to say, from my experience as an examiner this time last year, quite a few teachers were not very well prepared. Some left it all to the last minute; some had a minimal understanding of the technological issues involved. For example, not knowing how ...

Happy New Year (and farewell Option B – so long & thank you!)

Happy New year everyone! And yes – it’s a new start and a new year, but it’s also the end for some things, including the current visual arts course (final exams 2015) and in particular the B option, which does not figure in the new course. If you are a student now in your first year of DP visual arts, you are also among the last students to have the A or B choice. (The only choice in the new course will ...
